What Is the Difference Between a First Aid Certificate and CPR? | Blue Dog Training

First Aid (HLTAID011 Provide First Aid) and CPR (HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation) are related but different courses. CPR is a component within the broader First Aid qualification. If you complete HLTAID011 First Aid, CPR is already included. If you hold only HLTAID009 CPR, you are not certified in First Aid more broadly. In most workplace and employment contexts, the full HLTAID011 First Aid certificate is what is required.

The simplest way to think about it: CPR is one skill. First Aid is the full toolkit. If you are not sure which one your workplace or role needs, the answer is almost always the First Aid certificate.

What is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid?

HLTAID011 is the nationally recognised First Aid course that covers how to respond to a broad range of emergencies and medical situations. It includes CPR, as well as management of wounds and bleeding, burns, fractures, shock, choking, allergic reactions, and other common emergencies. It is the standard course required by most Australian workplaces.

Blue Dog Training's HLTAID011 course combines online theory at your own pace with an in-person practical assessment. The practical component is where you get hands-on with a manikin and practice the real skills under trainer guidance.

    What is HLTAID009 Provide CPR?

HLTAID009 is specifically focused on cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It covers performing CPR on adults, children, and infants in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. It does not cover the broader range of first aid skills included in HLTAID011.

HLTAID009 is used by people who need to maintain their CPR currency and renew their CPR skills annually, as recommended by the ARC. If you already hold HLTAID011, doing the CPR-only renewal each year is a cost-effective way to keep your CPR skills current.

    What about HLTAID010?

HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support sits between HLTAID009 and HLTAID011 in scope. It covers CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and basic emergency life support responses. It is less commonly required in workplace contexts than HLTAID011 but is appropriate for some roles and settings.

Which one does my workplace need?

Most Australian workplace health and safety requirements specify HLTAID011 Provide First Aid for first aid officers and nominated first aiders. HLTAID009 CPR is used for annual renewal of CPR skills by people who already hold HLTAID011. Check your specific workplace requirements, your industry award, and your state WHS regulator's guidance if you are unsure.
