VETiS qualifications do not directly contribute to the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) in Queensland in the same way that senior subject results do. However, successfully completing a VETiS qualification can contribute toward the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), which is the formal credential required for Year 12 completion in Queensland. Whether and how VETiS results interact with ATAR depends on the student's specific subject combination and learning pathway.

This is one of the questions where the honest answer is: it depends. Every student's situation is different. The best place to get personalised advice is your school's VET coordinator or the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) directly. What we can tell you is that VETiS is genuinely valuable whether or not it affects a student's ATAR.

How does VETiS contribute to the QCE?

The QCE is Queensland's formal senior schooling credential. Completing a VETiS qualification can contribute QCE credit points toward the total required for QCE achievement, depending on the specific qualification and how it is counted by QCAA.

A Certificate II completed through VETiS may contribute credits equivalent to a subject, depending on how QCAA recognises that qualification under the current QCE system. Check the QCAA website or speak to your school's QCE advisor for the most current and specific information.

Is VETiS worth doing even if it does not directly improve an ATAR?

Absolutely. The ATAR is relevant for students pursuing university pathways. For students who are heading into the trades, an ATAR is not the most important metric. What matters is having real skills, recognised qualifications, and a clear pathway into an apprenticeship or employment.

A student who finishes Year 12 with a CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways or MEM20422 Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, a White Card, and a clear sense of where they are headed in the trades is in an excellent position regardless of their ATAR score.

Can VETiS students also pursue university pathways?

Yes. VETiS and university pathways are not mutually exclusive. Many Queensland students complete VETiS qualifications while also pursuing senior subjects that contribute to ATAR calculations. The VETiS program is delivered within the timetable without requiring students to sacrifice their other subjects.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Where can I find the most current QCAA guidance on VETiS and ATAR?

A: The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) website at qcaa.qld.edu.au has current information on how VET qualifications interact with the QCE and ATAR. Your school's QCE advisor is also a great resource.

Q: Does completing VETiS affect a student's ability to apply for university?

A: Completing VETiS does not disqualify a student from university application. University entry in Queensland can be based on ATAR, but there are also alternative entry pathways. VET qualifications may even support some VET-to-university transition pathways.

Q: Is VETiS right for every student?

A: VETiS is particularly well suited to students who have an interest in the construction or engineering industries and who learn best through hands-on practical work. It is not for everyone, but for the right student it is an exceptional opportunity.

Q: What do Blue Dog Training VETiS students typically do after finishing school?

A: Many transition directly into apprenticeships, often with employers who are already familiar with the Blue Dog Training program. Others enter the workforce in entry-level construction or engineering roles. Some pursue further study. The pathway is flexible.
