No. White Cards issued in Queensland do not expire. Once you have been issued your White Card, it is valid for life. There is no renewal process, no retest, and no expiry date printed on the card. It works the same way across every state in Australia: a White Card issued under the national framework is a permanent qualification.
This is probably the most reassuring thing about the White Card for anyone who has put off getting one. You only have to do it once.
Why does my White Card not expire?
The White Card certifies that you have completed the nationally recognised construction induction training: CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry. This is a general safety induction, not a licence that requires regular renewal like some other industry certifications.
The thinking behind this is that the fundamental principles of site safety, hazard identification, and your rights and responsibilities do not change in a way that would require everyone to be retrained on a regular cycle. Once you understand the foundations, that knowledge stands.
Are there any situations where a White Card becomes invalid?
Your White Card can be cancelled or suspended in serious circumstances, such as repeated or severe safety breaches on site. However, this is uncommon and involves a formal process by the relevant authority. For the vast majority of workers, your White Card will simply never expire.
If your card was issued under a previous version of the unit (for example, CPCCOHS1001A, the older code), it is still valid. The card does not need to be replaced just because the unit code has changed.
What about other construction licences and certifications?
The White Card is just the starting point. Other licences and certifications you hold as a tradie or construction worker may have different rules around renewal and expiry. For example:
- First Aid certificates (HLTAID011) are recommended to be renewed every three years.
- CPR (HLTAID009) is recommended for renewal annually.
- High risk work licences such as working at heights, elevated work platform, and rigging licences are issued by state regulators and have their own conditions.
These are separate to your White Card. Your White Card itself does not expire regardless of what other training you do or do not keep current.
What if I lost my White Card?
If your White Card has been lost, damaged, or stolen, you do not need to redo the White Card course unless you haven't carried out construction work in the past 2 years. Your original training record is held by Blue Dog Training as the issuing RTO. The replacement process is straightforward.

Does my White Card work across all Australian states?
Yes. A Queensland White Card is accepted in every state and territory across Australia. Tasmania and Western Australia issued White Cards are also accepted Australia wide.

Q: I got my White Card 15 years ago. Is it still valid?
A: Yes, absolutely. White Cards do not expire. A White Card from 15 years ago is still valid on construction sites across Australia, as long as it was issued by an accredited RTO.
Q: My White Card has no expiry date on it. Is that normal?
A: Yes, that is completely normal. White Cards issued in Queensland and under the national framework do not have an expiry date. No date printed means no expiry.
Q: Do I need to do a refresher course after a long break from the industry?
A: Legally, no. Your White Card remains valid even if you have not worked in construction for many years. Some employers may encourage a voluntary refresher as a good safety practice, but it is not a legal requirement.
Q: Can my employer ask me to redo my White Card?
A: No. There is no valid reason an employer can reject your nationally recognised and verified White Card. An employer can and will ask you to complete a site-specific induction, which is different to your White Card.
Q: When do I have to redo my White Card?
A: If you lose your White Card and haven't been in industry for over 2 years, or if you lose the previous Blue Card regardless of construction industry currency.
