About this Course
This course builds practical fitting and machining skills through hands on workplace training supported by an experienced trainer.
Machinists use machine tools such as lathes, milling machines and grinders to produce precision metal parts. This type of work uses a mixture of manual and computerised technology to create, maintain and repair machined parts. As an apprentice machinist, the majority of learning is hands-on and practical, within an industry that changes alongside advances in technology.
Blue Dog Training’s MEM30219 Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Fitting/Machining) course is self-paced and flexible, with theory that strongly ties in with the practical skills developed in the workplace. Our training is suitable for school-based apprentices, part-time apprentices, full-time apprentices and mature-aged apprentices.
Training Model
On-the-job training. No classrooms or block training. Flexible theory delivery.
Course Duration
4 year contract term and 3.5 years standard expected duration. Existing skills and experience are recognised and training may be fast-tracked, if appropriate.
Requirements
You must be signed into an apprenticeship/traineeship contract with an employer.

Outcome
Nationally Recognised Qualification: MEM30219 Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Fitting/Machining)
Upon completion the apprentice will be suitable for the following positions:
- Fitter/Machinist
To be awarded the MEM30219 Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Fitting/Machining), units of competency to the value of 96 points must be achieved, chosen as outlined below:
- Core units of competency (totalling 33 points)
- Elective units of competency to a minimum value of 40 points from Group C electives
- Elective units of competency to a maximum value of 23 points from Group D to bring the total value to 96 points
Imported Elective Unit: Appropriate elective units to the value of 8 points may be chosen from this Training Package, other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses and count towards Group D elective units where those units are available for inclusion at Certificate III. Only select units that would be suitable for occupational outcomes in a mechanical trade environment.
Prerequisites: These units are mandatory considerations and are discussed during the development of the training plan.

Funding Guidelines
Career Start Program - General Information
Apprentices can only receive one government contribution for a Career Start - Apprenticeship funded qualification at any single point in time, i.e. a student is not funded to undertake two funded apprenticeships or traineeships at the same time.

Career Start Program - Full Fee Information
Eligibility
To be eligible for the DTET Career Start Apprenticeship program subsidy or government contribution you must:
- Currently employed as a Queensland apprentice under a registered training contract for this qualification.
- Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident including humanitarian entrant, temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen.
- Not currently be enrolled in a qualification.
- Not be a school student.
- Not exceed a maximum of two government funded apprenticeships or traineeships within a ten year period.
Student Co Contribution Fees
Co contribution fees apply and are paid over the duration of the apprenticeship. Approximately $1800 dollars depending on selected units. Concessions may apply for eligible learners, reducing the co contribution fee to approximately $760 dollars. Further details can be found in the Blue Dog Training Student Handbook. Career Start Program - Free Apprenticeships for under 25's Initiative
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s program you must:
- Be aged under 25 years prior to entering into a training contract (commencing or recommencing) for this qualification.
- Are currently employed as a Queensland apprentice (under a registered training contract) in an eligible apprenticeship qualification through this Program, such as this qualification.
- Be no longer enrolled at school.
- Commence or recommence this apprenticeship between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2027.
- Not currently be enrolled in a qualification.
- Not exceed a maximum of two government-funded apprenticeships or traineeships within a 10-year period.
Career Start Program - School-Based Apprenticeships
Eligibility
Eligible Students will be able to be funded for a maximum of one (1) School-based apprenticeship or traineeship and must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in Year 10, 11, or 12 in a Queensland School
- Not be concurrently enrolled in any other Qualifications funded by the Department
- And have entered into a training contract for this qualification.
