Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking)

Boilermakers fabricate, alter and repair metal products and structures using a range of techniques. Working in a variety of settings from small workshops to large sites, the majority of learning for an apprentice boilermaker is hands-on and practical.

Blue Dog Training’s MEM30319 Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking) course is self-paced and flexible, with theory that strongly ties in with the practical skills developed in the workplace. Our training is suitable for school-based apprentices, part-time apprentices, full-time apprentices and mature-aged apprentices.

Attendance On-the-job training. No classrooms or block training. Flexible theory delivery.
Course Duration 4 year contract term and 3.5 years standard expected duration. Existing skills and experience are recognised and training may be fast-tracked, if appropriate.

The Certificate III is Employment-based training. Apprentices must have an employer with a full scope of work and be supervised by a qualified tradesman to begin their Certificate III in Engineering.

To be awarded the MEM30319 Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking), units of competency to the value of 96 points must be achieved, chosen as outlined below:

  • Core units of competency (totalling 33 points)
  • Elective units of competency to a minimum value of 40 points from Group B
  • Elective units of competency to a maximum value of 23 points from Group H to bring the total value to 96 points

The Queensland government through the User Choice program (which is administered by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training) provides a contribution towards the cost of training and assessment for eligible Queensland apprentices and trainees.

Apprentices and trainees are usually required to pay a co-contribution fee for the cost of their training and assessment. In some cases, partial of full fee exemptions might apply.

To be eligible for the Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s program you must:

  • Be under the age of 25 when commencing the Certificate III in Engineering
  • Permanently reside in Queensland
  • Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency or a New Zealand citizen.


To be eligible for the DESBT User Choice program subsidy/government contribution you must:

  • Permanently reside in Queensland.
  • Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen.
  • Not have already utilised your entitlement under the User Choice program, that is apprentices and trainees, including school-based apprentices and trainees (SATs) can only receive a maximum of two Government funding contributions under the User Choice program.
  • Have entered into a Training Contract for a qualification that is funded by DESBT.

Co-contribution fees apply. Approximately $1600 depending on selected units. Concessions may apply for eligible learners, reducing the co-contribution fee to approximately $640. Further details can be found in the Blue Dog Training Student Handbook. For more information please call (07) 3166 3999.

Apprentices and trainees can only receive one government contribution for a User Choice funded qualification at any single point in time, i.e. a student is not funded to undertake two apprenticeships or traineeships at the same time.
