About this Course
This course prepares apprentices for boilermaking work with real on the job learning and flexible online theory.
The MEM31922 qualification was recently superseded by the nationally equivalent MEM31925 version. If we accept your enrolment application for the MEM31922 version, you’ll be notified prior to automatically transitioning into MEM31925 version before 2 September, 2026. There will be no changes to your training or assessment. For more information regarding transitions, please refer to our Student Handbook.
Welders fabricate, alter and repair metal products and structures using a range of techniques. Working in a variety of settings from small workshops to large sites, the majority of learning for an apprentice welder is hands-on and practical.
Blue Dog Training’s MEM31922 Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Welding) course is self-paced and flexible, with theory that strongly ties in with the practical skills developed in the workplace. Our training is suitable for school-based apprentices, part-time apprentices, full-time apprentices and mature-aged apprentices.
Training Model
On-the-job training. No classrooms or block training. Flexible theory delivery.
Course Duration
4 year contract term and 3.5 years standard expected duration. Existing skills and experience are recognised and training may be fast-tracked, if appropriate.

You must be signed into an apprenticeship/traineeship contract with an employer

Outcome
Nationally Recognised Qualification: MEM31922 Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Welding).
Upon completion the apprentice will be suitable for the following positions:
- Welder
To be awarded the MEM31922 Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (Welding), units of competency to the value of 96 points must be achieved, chosen as outlined below:
- Core units of competency (totalling 33 points)
- Elective units of competency to a minimum value of 40 points from Group C
- Elective units of competency to a maximum value of 23 points from Group H to bring the total value to 96 points.

Funding Guidelines
Career Start Program - General Information
Apprentices can only receive one government contribution for a Career Start - Apprenticeship funded qualification at any single point in time, i.e. a student is not funded to undertake two funded apprenticeships or traineeships at the same time.

Career Start Program - Full Fee Information
Eligibility
To be eligible for the DTET Career Start Apprenticeship program subsidy or government contribution you must:
- Currently employed as a Queensland apprentice under a registered training contract for this qualification.
- Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident including humanitarian entrant, temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen.
- Not currently be enrolled in a qualification.
- Not be a school student.
- Not exceed a maximum of two government funded apprenticeships or traineeships within a ten year period.
Student Co Contribution Fees
Co contribution fees apply and are paid over the duration of the apprenticeship. Approximately $1800 dollars depending on selected units. Concessions may apply for eligible learners, reducing the co contribution fee to approximately $760 dollars. Further details can be found in the Blue Dog Training Student Handbook. Career Start Program - Free Apprenticeships for under 25's Initiative
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s program you must:
- Be aged under 25 years prior to entering into a training contract (commencing or recommencing) for this qualification.
- Are currently employed as a Queensland apprentice (under a registered training contract) in an eligible apprenticeship qualification through this Program, such as this qualification.
- Be no longer enrolled at school.
- Commence or recommence this apprenticeship between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2027.
- Not currently be enrolled in a qualification.
- Not exceed a maximum of two government-funded apprenticeships or traineeships within a 10-year period.
Career Start Program - School-Based Apprenticeships
Eligibility
Eligible Students will be able to be funded for a maximum of one (1) School-based apprenticeship or traineeship and must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in Year 10, 11, or 12 in a Queensland School
- Not be concurrently enrolled in any other Qualifications funded by the Department
- And have entered into a training contract for this qualification.
