About the White Card
What is a White Card?
A White Card is proof that you have completed general construction induction training. It is a legal requirement for anyone who needs to enter or work on a construction site anywhere in Australia. Without one, you cannot legally set foot on a construction site.
Who needs a White Card?
Anyone required to enter a construction site in Australia needs a White Card. This includes, but not limited to, tradies, apprentices, labourers, site support staff, delivery drivers, cleaners, and professionals such as architects, engineers, and surveyors who need site access.
What is CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry?
CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry is the nationally accredited unit of competency that underpins the White Card. Completing this unit is what qualifies you to be issued with a White Card. It is the same unit delivered by every registered training organisation across Australia, so your qualification is recognised on construction sites in every state and territory.
Is a Queensland White Card valid in other states?
Yes. All White Cards are nationally recognised and accepted on construction sites across every state and territory in Australia.
I have an old White Card from interstate. Is it still valid in Queensland?
All White Cards issued under the current national scheme are valid across every state and territory in Australia, including Queensland. If you completed your training in another state under the current CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry unit, your card is recognised here. If you hold a very old card issued under a previous state-based scheme before national harmonisation, you may need to check whether it is still accepted. Contact the Blue Dog Training team if you are unsure about your card's status.
Does a White Card expire?
Queensland White Cards do not have an expiry date. However, if you have not carried out any construction work for more than two continuous years, WorkSafe QLD recommends completing a new White Card course to ensure your safety knowledge is current.
Is the course the same everywhere in Australia or does Queensland have different requirements?
The core unit of competency, CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry, is the same across Australia. However, Queensland has specific delivery and identity verification requirements that differ from some other states. In Queensland, the course must be completed face to face or via Virtual Classroom (Zoom) with a qualified trainer. Fully self-paced online delivery is not accepted in Queensland.
Course Details
How do I get a White Card in Queensland?
You can complete your White Card training through Blue Dog Training at one of their training centres across South East Queensland, or via live virtual classroom from anywhere in Queensland. Once you successfully finish the course, Blue Dog Training will issue your Queensland White Card on behalf of WorkSafe QLD.
How long does the course take?
The minimum course duration is 4.5 hours. Actual completion time may vary depending on your delivery method, class size, and assessment requirements.
How much does it cost?
Pricing varies depending on your session type, delivery method, and location. Courses start from $89 for Queensland high school students with a valid student ID provided at enrolment. Weekday morning and virtual classroom sessions are the most popular options, starting from $99.
Can I do the White Card course online?
Queensland residents must complete their White Card training face to face in a classroom or via a live virtual classroom (Zoom) with a qualified trainer. You cannot complete the course entirely at your own pace online as a Queensland resident. Note: there is a lot of outdated information online suggesting the course is available fully online. This changed in February 2019.
Can I do the course via Zoom from home?
Yes. Blue Dog Training offers live Virtual Classroom (Zoom) sessions delivered by a qualified trainer. You must have a stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and your PPE on hand for the practical component. It is recommended to use a laptop or computer, and ideally two screens.
What topics are covered in the course?
The course covers health and safety legislative requirements for construction work, hazard identification and risk control measures, WHS communication and reporting processes, incident and emergency response, and the correct selection and fitting of personal protective equipment (PPE).
How am I assessed?
Assessment includes written theory questions, verbal questions with your trainer, and a practical component where you demonstrate the correct fitting of PPE. All assessment is completed as part of the session on the day.
What is the difference between a White Card and other site inductions?
Your White Card is a nationally recognised baseline qualification that allows you to enter any construction site in Australia. It is different from a site-specific induction, which is an additional briefing some sites require before you can start work. Your White Card does not replace a site induction, and a site induction does not replace your White Card. You may need both.
I am a delivery driver who occasionally accesses construction sites. Do I need one?
Yes. Anyone required to enter a construction site in Australia needs a White Card, regardless of their role. This includes delivery drivers, cleaners, and other non-trade workers who need site access.

What is a USI and do I need one?
A USI is a Unique Student Identifier. It is a personal reference number that creates a secure online record of all your nationally recognised training and qualifications in Australia. You must have a USI before you can complete the White Card course, as CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry is an accredited unit of competency and your results cannot be recorded without one.
Do I need a USI before I book?
You will need your USI before you can complete your enrolment details after booking. If you do not have one yet, you can create yours for free at usi.gov.au in around five minutes. You will need a form of ID to verify your identity. We recommend sorting your USI before your session date so there are no delays on the day.
How do I get a USI?
Getting a USI is free and takes about five minutes. Head to usi.gov.au and follow the steps to create your account. You will need a form of ID such as a driver's licence, passport, or Medicare card to verify your identity. Once created, your USI stays with you for life and applies to all future accredited training.
I am on a Student Visa. Can I complete the course?
Yes. If you hold an eligible Student Visa and are physically located in Queensland at the time of training and assessment, you can complete the White Card course with Blue Dog Training under the same conditions as all other students.
What to Bring (in-person vs virtual)
What identification do I need?
For most people, it is simple. You just need one of these current Queensland Transport and Main Roads documents:
- Driver licence
- Adult proof of age card
- Photo identification card
- Industry authority
- Marine licence indicator
If you do not have any of the above, you will need three documents from the list on the Blue Dog Training website. These must be originals, meaning no photos of documents and no photocopies.
Photos or screenshots of documents are not accepted. If you are using a digital licence, it must be open live in the Queensland Digital Licence app on the day, with a current refresh showing.
If your name has changed, bring a supporting document such as a marriage certificate or change of name certificate so your card can be issued in your current name.
If you are a secondary school student, a temporary overseas worker, a New Zealand citizen, or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person, there are alternative ID arrangements available.
Can I use my Queensland Digital Licence as ID?
Yes. For enrolment purposes you can upload an image or PDF from your digital licence. On the day of your class, if presenting your Queensland Digital Licence to your trainer, it must be displayed directly from the app with a current refresh date showing.
What do I need to bring to an in-person session?
You will need your ID used dring the enrolment process and a personal device such as a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop with internet access. Part of your assessment is completed online, so having a charged device with you is essential.
What do I need for a Virtual Classroom session?
For a Virtual Classroom (Zoom) session you will need a laptop or computer (recommended over a phone or tablet), a stable internet connection, a working camera and microphone, and your PPE at your location. Having two screens available will make the session easier to follow. Your ID used during enrolment must also be ready to present on camera.
What PPE do I need for a Virtual Classroom session?
For Virtual Classroom (Zoom) sessions, you will need to have your PPE with you at home or at your location. This includes a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and a hi-vis vest, jacket or shirt. The practical PPE assessment is completed on camera as part of the course, so you must have your gear ready on the day.
Do I need to bring anything else on the day?
Along with your ID used during enrolment, you will need a personal device such as a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop with internet access. For Virtual Classroom (Zoom) sessions, a laptop or computer is recommended, and having two screens available will make the session easier to follow.
Training Locations
Where are the training centres located? Is there parking?
Blue Dog Training has centres at Arundel (Gold Coast), Milton (Brisbane), Ipswich, Logan/Browns Plains, Mango Hill (North Brisbane), and Mooloolaba (Sunshine Coast). All locations have parking available in the vicinity of the training centre. You can view addresses and directions on the Blue Dog Training website.
On the Day
What happens if I am late?
What if I forget my ID on the day?
You can still participate in the theory component of the course, however your White Card cannot be issued until your trainer has sighted your identification. Contact the Blue Dog Training team as soon as possible if you realise you have forgotten your ID so we can discuss your options.
What if my internet drops out during a Virtual Classroom session?
If you experience a connection issue during your Virtual Classroom (Zoom) session, contact the Blue Dog Training team as soon as possible. A stable internet connection is essential for virtual delivery, so we recommend testing your setup before your session date.
Can I leave early?
The minimum course duration is 4.5 hours and all assessment must be completed on the day. You will need to remain for the full session to be issued with your White Card.
What if I fail the assessment?
Your trainer will always provide feedback to support you if you are unsuccessful on your first attempt. You are permitted up to three attempts to successfully complete each assessment. If you are not successful after your third attempt, you may be required to re-enrol in the course.
Your White Card
When will I receive my White Card after completing the course?
If you complete an in-person session, you will receive your White Card on the day upon successful completion. If you complete a Virtual Classroom (Zoom) session, your Statement of Attainment will be emailed to you that day and your physical White Card will follow by post. You can expect to receive it within two weeks, depending on your location and Australia Post delivery times.
What is a Statement of Attainment?
A Statement of Attainment is the official record issued by your RTO confirming you have successfully completed CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry. Blue Dog Training emails your Statement of Attainment the same day, after you complete the course. Keep it somewhere safe as it is proof of your qualification and can be used to obtain a replacement card if your White Card is ever lost or damaged.
Can my White Card be sent to a PO Box?
Yes. You can nominate a PO Box as your delivery address during enrolment.
Can someone else collect or receive my card on my behalf?
Yes. If you need someone else to receive your card, you will need to provide written authority for them to collect on your behalf. Contact the Blue Dog Training team to arrange this.
Can I track my card in the post?
Queensland White Cards and all replacement cards are sent via standard postage, which does not include tracking. If your card has not arrived within two weeks, contact the Blue Dog Training team.
Do I need to carry my White Card on site at all times?
Yes. You are required to have your White Card available for inspection whenever you are on a construction site. Most sites will ask to sight it before you enter. Until your physical card arrives, your Statement of Attainment serves as proof that you have completed the course.
What if my card arrives damaged or with incorrect details?
Contact the Blue Dog Training team as soon as possible if your card arrives damaged or contains incorrect information. Do not discard your card as it will need to be returned to Blue Dog Training.
I've lost my White Card. Can I get a replacement?
Yes. Blue Dog Training can issue a replacement White Card if you completed your training with them, or if you trained with another Queensland RTO and hold a valid Statement of Attainment as evidence. The replacement cost is $44. Click here to request a replacement.
I have an old Blue Card, not a White Card. What do I do?
The old Queensland Construction Blue Card can no longer be replaced. You will need to complete a new White Card course (CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry) to be issued with a current White Card.
I completed my White Card with a different RTO. Can Blue Dog Training issue a replacement?
If you completed your training with another Queensland RTO, Blue Dog Training may be able to assist with a replacement provided you have your Statement of Attainment or USI VET Transcript as evidence. Contact the team directly to discuss your situation.
I already have a White Card but want to do a refresher. Can I?
White Card training does not have a formal refresher course under the current national framework. However, if your card has become void due to more than two years of inactivity in the construction industry, you will need to complete the full CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry course again.Contact the Blue Dog Training team if you are unsure about your situation.
