The main topics covered in a White Card course
Work Health and Safety legislation
You will learn about the WHS laws that apply to construction sites in Australia, including the roles and responsibilities of everyone on site: workers, supervisors, and principal contractors. You will understand your rights as a worker, including your right to refuse unsafe work.
Hazard identification and risk management
This is the core of what a White Card is about. You will learn how to spot hazards on a construction site, understand the different types of risk, and apply the hierarchy of controls to manage those risks. This knowledge is not just relevant on day one; it stays with you throughout your entire trade career.
Construction site safety essentials
Emergency procedures
You will learn what to do if something goes wrong on site: how to respond to an incident, how to raise the alarm, evacuation procedures, and the importance of reporting near misses and incidents as well as actual accidents.
Communication on site
Construction sites rely on clear communication to stay safe. The course covers how to communicate effectively with supervisors, contractors, and other workers, and how to read and understand safety documentation including Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).

No. The White Card course is designed to be accessible to anyone entering the construction industry, regardless of your background or education level. It is not a technical exam; it is an induction into workplace safety culture.

What happens after you complete the White Card course?
Once you pass the assessment, Blue Dog Training issues your Statement of Attainment for CPCWHS1001. For QLD and WA students, your White Card follows. From there, you are legally able to work on construction sites across Australia.
Your White Card is just the beginning. From there, you might look at starting a carpentry or engineering apprenticeship, completing short courses for specific site skills, or working toward higher trade qualifications. Blue Dog Training offers pathways for all of those.
