Blue Dog celebrates National Skills Week

Dedicated to the rising status of practical and vocational learning, this year National Skills Week highlights skills associated with Australia's emerging areas of opportunity.

A key pillar to Australia's workforce and vocational education, Apprenticeships provide millions of people with a nationally recognised qualification they can take anywhere in Australia, and is held in high regard in many other countries.  With over 1,500 Apprentices currently completing their training with Blue Dog, we've quickly become an authority on the value, benefit and extensive career opportunities in traditional and emerging trades.

Second year Sheet Metal Apprentice, Kaitlin Tweedale is also a fan of skilled training.  "There's so much value in an apprenticeship. I'd definitely choose an apprenticeship over Uni; it's good to know you're 100% qualified and confident after four years of training".

Working from AE Smith in Mackay, Kaitlin admits that it wasn't 'love at first sight' but she's so glad she stuck with it. "I love my apprenticeship now, I'm surprised everyday by my abilities and how much I've learnt". Enjoying the problem-solving element of her trade, Kaitlin has been exposed to some big commercial projects. "I work in creating custom sheet metal ducts for commercial air conditioning projects; every day is like solving a new puzzle! We receive the plans then create and install systems to suit the whole building".

As a female tradie in a male-dominated field, Kaitlin says when it comes to the work; she's just 'one of the blokes'. "Girls work harder than boys; the only difference is I get a hand when lifting heavy things". Of advice for young girls interested in a trade? "Be tough, be strong and be happy. And don't let the boys push you around!"

SkillsOne, the organisation behind National Skills Week promotes the extensive career opportunities and pathways in traditional trades and emerging skills with a bunch of advice from tradies in the field. So what's Kaitlin's advice for people thinking about a trade? "I definately recommend doing a trade - you work really hard for the end goal but it's all worth it in the end. When looking for an apprenticeship work experience and your resume is really important. Get as much work experience as you can to show off your work ethic, enthusiasm and skills".

A passport to a better job, higher pay packet and a more rewarding work life, our Apprentices and employers know first-hand the value in investing in an Apprenticeship with Blue Dog Training.
