Bridging the gap between engineer and tradesman, Matthew Gatt has been able to achieve a Certificate III in Engineering with Blue Dog Training after finishing his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. The talented 25-year-old said he definitely benefited from having the two qualifications, as he was able to understand the construction process from start to finish.
“I think there’s a decent divide between engineers and tradesman,” he said. “In my case, it’s a bit unique, because I understand both sides of the fence.”
With Australians being more skilled than ever before, according to a
report by the Department of Employment, Matthew said anyone could benefit from getting a trade under their belt.
“Any related trade would be good for someone coming out of Uni to have. If you look at either hiring a boilermaker or an engineer, they’re going to favour someone who can do both, especially in construction roles.”
Matthew emphasised the benefit of being assisted by his Blue Dog trainer, Brian, who has completed the engineering trade and worked in the industry for 36 years.
“Brian understands what he’s talking about, he’s obviously done the trade. That’s definitely important I think.”
He was also quick to point out the advantages of Blue Dog Training’s flexible method of delivery, saying that he was able to complete the training at a pace that suited him. As he looks to build a future in the engineering industry, Matt said he was not thinking too far ahead, but his end goal was to open his own shop one day.
For now, he’s happy to continue along the path he’s on, working on projects such as large LED billboards and signs for
Bushell Engineering. Working on these large-scale lighting projects seems fitting, as the future for this Blue Dog graduate is as bright as can be.
