Having started his apprenticeship only six months ago, fresh-faced first year Carpentry Apprentice Cameron Torrens manages to juggle work, online training and coaching commitments, whilst preparing for his own international Muay Thai fight in Bangkok this August.
A finalist in the 2014 World Championships in Malaysia, sadly Cameron bowed out with a broken arm. Motivated to return, he placed second in the Australian titles this year and is now focussed on preparing his brother for the World Cup – which hosts nearly two thousand athletes from over 100 countries. With an intense training and competition regime, Cameron enjoys the physical nature of his work, “I really like working outside – it also helps keep me in shape for my training and competitions”.
Leaving school at the end of Year 10 and transitioning to an apprenticeship the following month, Cameron is happy with his decision; “I’m glad I started my apprenticeship, I’m really enjoying it and have already learnt so much”.
Also a fan of Blue Dog’s online learning, Cameron finds the system relevant to the practical work he’s completing onsite, but admits amongst his offsite commitments, “I really need to squeeze it in! So I’m glad it’s easy to use”. Already well-versed in the trade, Cameron has worked on two story unit blocks and three story stick frames in the Brisbane and Ipswich areas. Keeping in touch with Trainer Ed Ridings, Cameron appreciates the real and relevant support from a trade qualified and industry experienced Trainer; “Ed’s calls are really helpful, I like that he understands the work I’m doing onsite”.
Confident in continued support throughout his apprenticeship, Cameron can also be confident in the support from his Blue Dog community as he jets off to Thailand next monthWe look forward to hearing the results of Cameron’s training regime with brother Josh and of course the outcome of his own fight in Bangkok.
All the best Cameron!
