Qualifications confirm skills for motivated Tradie

With two trades and three qualifications under his belt, hard-working boilermaker and diesel fitter Glenn Harlow found the perfect fit with Blue Dog Training.

Already a qualified boilermaker, Glenn signed up with Blue Dog to complete an additional trade in diesel fitting, then completed the Certificate IV in Engineering (Higher Engineering Tradesperson).

With an enviable determination to succeed, he was able to complete his training in record time, thanks to the flexible learning provided by Blue Dog. “I really like the self-paced nature of Blue Dog. If you really want to get in and work hard you can - you’re not forced to move at the same pace as everyone else in a classroom,” he said.

Working in the mining industry, his qualifications have exposed him to a range of exciting jobs in hard rock (gold, copper, silver), iron ore and coal.  Given the skills and variety of working environments accessible with a boilermaker qualification, why did Glenn want more than one trade qualification?

Not one to give a textbook response, he has a measured and simple reply for that:  “The downturn in mining was a big motivation for me. I needed confirmation of the skills I already have in trade and management, and am now able to secure my employment in the industry. It’s becoming harder to keep jobs in mining if you don’t have formal qualifications”.

Blue Dog’s Certificate IV in Engineering provides existing tradespeople with a passion for leadership, formalised competencies to advance within their careers. Already working in a supervisory role Glenn says the decision to complete the additional qualification was a ‘no brainer’.

Now qualified and meeting the criteria for an array of jobs, he credits the online system for his motivation to get through the content. “Blue Dog’s style of learning really is a modern classroom. While you still have to prove competencies in the workshop or on-site, the majority of the learning is online so you can really get in and smash it out if you want to”.

A fan of Blue Dog’s other unique selling point, Glenn found his trade qualified trainer Steve Fitzgerald made a big contribution to his success.  “It’s a real benefit to have a trainer who knows the content and understands exactly what you’re doing at work. I was able to talk to Steve on the same level, get the help I needed quickly and move on”.

Glenn has achieved his highest qualification, but he is keen for others to experience the same benefits and proudly recommends training with Blue Dog to other colleagues.  With an eagerness to succeed he notes that “if there was something else I could do to further my trade with Blue Dog, I’d sign up for it straight away” and we’re confident he would too!
