Apprentice takes flight on the world stage

Third year carpentry apprentice Loughlin Murphy is now not only known for his attention to detail on a work site, but also for his Ultimate Frisbee achievements.

Following a mate’s recommendation, he took up the sport while in High School and hasn’t looked back.  Now representing Australia, Loughlin heads to London this week to compete in the Ultimate Frisbee World Championships.

Constantly impressed by Loughlin’s ability at work, employer Cliff Curtain says he’s excited to have an international sportsman in his team. “He certainly works hard and deserves all the good things that will come his way as part of this experience”.

An ever-changing and exciting apprenticeship, Loughin enjoys carpentry, one of the most popular trade options for young Australians, “I really like working outside and am always learning something new from (Employer) Cliff”.

With his onsite work complimented by Blue Dog’s online system Loughlin attributes his confidence with the theory content to trainer Kerry’s contact and support; “Kerry is great, he always keeps in touch to make sure everything is OK with my apprenticeship and training”.

With renovations making up the majority of their work, Loughlin’s ability to think outside the box and interpret plans within an existing structure has been a valuable asset to Cliff. “Loughlin is certainly one of the best. He’s disciplined, reliable, and punctual and has an ability to think through problems and situations. He’s certainly a natural carpenter!”

Busy juggling work, theory training and fundraising efforts, we’re sure the physical nature of Loughlin’s work contributed to maintaining his athletic ability as training ramped up.  With more than five million players worldwide, Loughlin’s achievement is cause for celebration and will certainly have those at home on the edge of their seat in support!

As they fly off to the UK, Trainer Kerry Theuerkauf and the rest of the team at Blue Dog Training wish Loughlin and his team all the very best in London as they try to outrun, outjump, outthrow, outcatch, and outthink their opponents.
