Construction Safety: White Cards Can Save Lives

Published to Industry Updates on Aug 17, 2018

A career that involves dangerous tools, working at heights, and destroying/altering buildings is bound to produce fatalities and injuries if proper precaution is not taken. As technology advances, the rate of injuries in construction continues to decrease, but those working in the industry are still considered at high risk of a serious workplace injury.

A serious injury is defined as one that renders the employee incapacitated and unable to work for at least one working week. Around 12,600 workers compensation claims are accepted from the construction industry each year for injuries or diseases involving one or more weeks off work.

According to the Construction Industry Profile published by Safe Work Australia in 2015, the most common work-related injuries experienced by workers in the construction industry were due to:

  • Hitting or being hit by an object (31%)
  • Lifting, pushing, or pulling objects (30%)
  • Falls from a height (15%)

The Construction Industry Profile also shows that between 2003 and 2013, 401 workers died on construction sites in Australia, with the majority of those (28%, or 112 workers) involved with falls from a height. Other fatalities were made up of:

  • Vehicle collisions (16%)
  • Electrocution (15%)
  • Being hit by a moving object (12%)
  • Being hit by a falling object (11%)
  • Being trapped between or in equipment (8%)
  • Other causes (9%)

Despite these confronting statistics, the safety of those working in the construction industry can only improve. The construction industry is ever-growing, and as such, more positions are going to become available on construction sites. One of the most important factors in staying safe on-site is providing adequate education and training, so new employees can drastically reduce the chances of a severe or fatal accident.

One such form of training is the White Card course (CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry). The White Card course is a mandatory requirement for those who want to work in construction throughout Australia. It is designed to provide tradesmen with the knowledge and insight to avoid hazards and risks in the workplace, thus limiting the possibility of serious workplace accidents.
