Motivated by the desire to give back to the community, Blue Dog Training has donated $5500.00 to Cancer Council Queensland to put towards their latest community housing refurbishment project.
Each year Cancer Council Queensland has capacity to provide 100,000 bed nights to regional cancer patients and caregivers who have to travel away from home to access life-saving treatment. This year, the charity organisation is refurbishing and enriching their Herston lodges with a much needed update. They will begin work in April on the first of five blocks of units, to truly create a home-away-from-home for patients during treatment.
Representatives from the Blue Dog team took the opportunity to visit the Herston lodge and inspect the current condition of the units, to gain an appreciation for the fantastic facelift planned for these lodges. “It was great to have a tour of the Herston Lodges and to see firsthand the great work being done by the Cancer Council for cancer patients and caregivers.” said Blue Dog’s CEO, Kristine Skippington, “It must be a great comfort to patients to know there is a quality accommodation available so close to the hospital, that is managed in such an understanding and caring way.”
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift thanked Blue Dog Training for their generous contribution to the Charles Wanstall Apex Lodge refurbishment project.
“Charles Wanstall Apex Lodge provides patients and carers with a home-away-from-home during treatment in Brisbane,” Ms Clift said.
“With the help of Blue Dog Training we’ll be able to maintain a standard of accommodation that provides guests with a comfortable and homely setting where they can rest and recover during treatment.
“This vital facility allows patients to have the best possible chance of beating cancer, and will contribute to improved survival rates long-term.
“Equally important, patients at the lodge have access to support services and practical assistance, such as Cancer Counselling and peer support, underpinning quality of life.
“We thank Blue Dog Training for their ongoing support of our work in the fight against cancer.”
Cancer is truly a disease that continues to have significant impact on patients, and the community around them. One would be hard-pressed to find an individual that has not been affected by this terrible disease in some way, and Blue Dog Training is proud to do our part to join the fight against this challenge.
We look forward to seeing the development of the refurbishment project and hope that our donation will bring the Cancer Council closer to their goal of enhancing this vital service in Queensland.
