What Is VETiS and How Does It Work in Queensland Schools? | Blue Dog Training

VETiS stands for Vocational Education and Training in Schools. It is a program that integrates nationally recognised trade and vocational training into the Queensland secondary school timetable. Students complete real qualifications from Certificate II level as part of their regular school program, building skills and credentials that create direct pathways into apprenticeships and employment. Blue Dog Training delivers construction and engineering VETiS programs in partnership with Queensland secondary schools.

In simple terms: instead of students waiting until they finish school to start thinking about a trade, VETiS lets them get started while they are still in Year 11 and 12. By the time they graduate, they already have a nationally recognised qualification and a clear path forward.

How does VETiS work in practice?

VETiS is delivered by Blue Dog Training in partnership with individual schools. The theory component is accessed through Blue Dog Training's interactive Learning Management System (LMS) within the school environment. Practical projects and assessment activities are completed on site at the school, using the school's workshop facilities, under the supervision of a qualified and industry-experienced Blue Dog trainer.

Crucially, the training fits within the school's existing timetable. It is delivered on a subject line, meaning students complete their VETiS qualification during timetabled class time without missing their other subjects.

Which qualifications does Blue Dog Training deliver through VETiS?

  • CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways: introduces students to the construction industry through hands-on projects covering carpentry, bricklaying, and other construction skills.
  • MEM20422 Certificate II in Engineering Pathways: introduces students to engineering and manufacturing tasks, building skills relevant to boilermaking, welding, fitting, sheetmetal, and related trades.

Both qualifications are delivered over two years, with students typically enrolling in Year 11 and completing in Year 12.

What is the benefit for students?

Students who complete a VETiS qualification through Blue Dog Training leave school with a nationally recognised Certificate II qualification, a clear pathway into a trade apprenticeship, and in many cases, a White Card that allows them to work on construction sites from day one.

They also graduate with practical skills and a connection to the industry that makes them significantly more attractive to employers. Many Blue Dog Training apprentices start their trade training as VETiS students.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Does VETiS cost anything for students or families?

A: For eligible Queensland state school students, the first VETiS qualification is funded through state VETiS funding. A second qualification is delivered at no cost under a Fee for Service arrangement. Non-state school students may have different arrangements. Contact us for details specific to your school situation.

Q: What does a student need to enrol in VETiS through Blue Dog Training?

A: Students need to be enrolled in a school that is a Blue Dog Training VETiS partner, have a USI (Unique Student Identifier), and meet any additional school-specific eligibility requirements. School approval is required for participation.

Q: Are VETiS qualifications the same as full trade qualifications?

A: VETiS qualifications are Certificate II level, which are foundational qualifications. They are not the same as the Certificate III trade qualifications achieved through a full apprenticeship, but they provide direct credit and pathways into those qualifications.

Q: Can a student do VETiS if they are also doing other subjects?

A: Yes. The VETiS program is designed to be delivered within the timetable without affecting other subjects. Students can pursue both academic and VET pathways simultaneously.
