How Do I Get a White Card in Queensland?

Getting a White Card in Queensland is simpler than you might think. You complete nationally recognised safety training called CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry, pass the assessment, and your White Card is issued. The whole process can take as little as a few hours.

If you are planning to work on any construction site in Australia, a White Card is not optional. It is a legal requirement. Whether you are just starting out in the trades, switching careers, or heading to site for the first time, the White Card is your ticket to get through the gate.

Here at Blue Dog Training, we have been helping Queenslanders get their White Cards since 2004. We are a Queensland-born RTO, our trainers are actual tradies, and we offer a few different ways to get it done so you can pick what suits you.

What exactly is a White Card?

A White Card is the common name for the construction induction card issued after you complete the required WHS (Work Health and Safety) induction training. Its official name is the CPCWHS1001 general construction induction training card, but everyone in the industry just calls it a White Card.

It proves you understand the basics of working safely on a construction site: hazard identification, site safety rules, your rights and responsibilities, and what to do in an emergency. Without one, you cannot legally set foot on a construction site in Queensland or anywhere else in Australia.

Step-by-step: how to get your White Card with Blue Dog Training

Step 1: Choose your delivery mode

Blue Dog Training offers two ways to complete your White Card training:

Face-to-face: attend a session at one of our locations across Queensland. Great if you learn best with a trainer in the room and want to get it done in one go.
Virtual Classroom (Zoom): join a live session with a qualified trainer and other learners via Zoom. The same real trainer, just without the commute.

Step 2: Enrol and complete your theory

Head to bluedogtraining.com.au, choose your preferred delivery mode and session, and complete your enrolment online. You will need your USI (Unique Student Identifier) ready. If you do not have one yet, you can get it free at usi.gov.au in a few minutes.

For classes run in Queensland, theory training happens on the day.

Step 3: Complete the assessment

The assessment is practical and straightforward. It is designed to confirm you can apply the safety knowledge, not to trick you. Our trainers have been on the tools themselves, so they explain things in plain English.

Step 4: Receive your White Card

Once you pass, your White Card is also issued by Blue Dog Training. Your Statement of Attainment is also issued by Blue Dog Training as the registered RTO. In Queensland, your White Card is nationally recognised, meaning it is valid on construction sites across every state and territory in Australia.

How long does the White Card take?

Face-to-face and virtual classroom sessions typically run for a half a day. No theory or practical work required outside of your class time.

Where can I do my White Card in Queensland?

Blue Dog Training has locations across Queensland including Milton (Brisbane), Ipswich, Gold Coast (Arundel), Logan (Browns Plains), North Brisbane (Mango Hill), and the Sunshine Coast (Mooloolaba). We also offer virtual classroom delivery so you can complete your training from anywhere in Queensland.

What do I need to bring?

You will need valid photo identification such as a driver's licence or passport, and your USI. For face-to-face sessions, wear comfortable clothing and enclosed footwear. Those on Zoom will need to prepare their own PPE. Check your confirmation email or the course page for anything specific to your session.

Q: Can I do my White Card the same day I book?

A: In many cases, yes. For face-to-face and virtual classroom sessions, availability will depend on our session schedule, but we run sessions regularly across our Queensland locations. Bookings close 1 hour prior to a session commencing.

Q: How much does a White Card cost with Blue Dog Training?

A: White Card pricing is listed on our website at bluedogtraining.com.au. Queensland students are eligible for a discounted rate of AU$89.00 for Monday to Friday sessions.

Q: Do I need any prior experience or qualifications?

A: No. The White Card course is an induction course designed for people entering the construction industry. No prior experience or trade qualifications are required.

Q: Is the White Card the same as a safety induction?

A: Your White Card proves you have completed the nationally recognised construction induction training. Individual work sites may also run their own site-specific inductions when you arrive, which are separate to your White Card.

Q: What if I fail the assessment?

A: Our trainers support you through the process. If you need a second attempt at any assessment activity, our team will work with you to make sure you get there.

What We Deliver: Three Programs That Actually Open Doors

CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways

Two years. Four QCE credits. A qualification that gives students a running start into one of Australia's most in-demand industries.

This program gives students exposure to core construction skills and sets them up for an apprenticeship or further training with serious foundations already in place. It is government funded, industry aligned, and designed to go the distance.

MEM20422 Certificate II in Engineering Pathways

Also two years. Also four QCE credits. Government funded. And just as powerful.

The engineering pathway builds practical workshop skills that translate directly into fabrication, welding, fitting, and mechanical trades. Students finish the program with hands-on experience and a qualification that employers recognise on day one.

CPCWHS1001 Prepare To Work Safely In The Construction Industry (White Card)

Before any student sets foot on a construction site, they need their White Card. This course is available as a fee-for-service option for school students and their teachers.

Minimum 4.5 hours delivery

It is a practical, no-nonsense course that covers the safety fundamentals every person working in construction needs to know. And for students who are serious about a trade, it is one of the first real steps through the door.

Since 2004, Blue Dog Training has been built by tradies, for tradies. These nominations represent the people who make that possible: our trainers, our apprentices, and the employers and schools who back them every day.

This nomination recognises Blue Dog Training as a whole, celebrating 22 years of operation, a team of 140 staff, and training delivery across the full length of Queensland. 	Christopher Maude Metropolitan Region Chris is a carpentry trainer whose precision, care, and commitment to every apprentice has produced multiple QTA recognised apprentices. He works closely with employers across South East Queensland including Happy Haus, Estia Constructions, Unique Constructions, and Pagewood Projects.
	Brady Walker Metropolitan Region Brady brings sharp industry intelligence to every apprentice and employer he works with across the Brisbane and Ipswich corridor. His practical, employer focused training style has earned consistent respect from the builders he supports.
	Jess Zwart North Coast Region Jess is a dual qualified mechanic and fitter who services schools across the Bundaberg region with autonomy and precision. A MIGAS Women in Trades Scholarship recipient and STEM advocate, Jess actively encourages young women into trade careers.
	Shane Watson North Coast Region Shane has been with Blue Dog for over a decade and has overseen more than 1,050 qualification completions across his career. His consistency and care for students across the North Coast region speak for themselves.
	Ryan McDonald Darling Downs South West Region Ryan serves schools and employers across the Darling Downs with a grounded, community focused approach to training that builds lasting partnerships across the region.

Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year

	Jack Tuttle Metropolitan Region Employer: T&B Builders Jack completed his carpentry apprenticeship with T&B Builders in three and a half years. A gym co-owner pursuing his Diploma of Building, Jack regularly leads apprentices on site and brings a maturity shaped by both a business degree and a genuine passion for the trade.
	Giordani Garozza Metropolitan Region Employer: Estia Constructions Gio completed his carpentry apprenticeship with Estia Constructions, bringing an honours degree and exceptional technical capability to the trade. His employer trusted him on projects of significant scale, and his approach reflects both intellectual rigour and genuine pride in the craft.
	Dean Nguyen Metropolitan Region Employer: Calara Constructions Pty Ltd Dean completed his carpentry apprenticeship with Calara Constructions five months ahead of schedule, working across regional sites including Roma and Mitchell. His story is one of quiet determination, cultural pride, and consistent excellence.
	Liam Weber South East Region (Gold Coast, Logan, Redlands, Scenic Rim) Employer: Bradfield Constructions QLD Liam completed his carpentry apprenticeship with Bradfield Constructions after overcoming a significant training gap with a previous RTO. His resilience, including mastering complex work such as off form curved concrete stairs, is a testament to perseverance and the value of the right training partnership.
	Angus Ingram North Coast Region Employer: Greystone Construction & Design Angus completed his carpentry apprenticeship with Greystone Construction and Design. Ambitious and driven, he is already working towards a C6 crane licence and a future in civil construction.
	Mark Albury North Coast Region Employer: Metcalfe Constructions Mark completed his carpentry apprenticeship with Metcalfe Constructions, returning to the trades after first entering the industry in 1999. His persistence, community involvement, and decades of experience make him a compelling example of lifelong learning.
	James Hoppe North Coast Region Employer: Paul Greer Builders James is completing his carpentry apprenticeship with Paul Greer Builders. A natural problem solver, James demonstrated deep technical understanding on a complex roof integration project, and his accuracy in technical drawings has been described by his trainer as exceptional.
	Carlson Zunker North Coast Region Employer: Ethan Field Constructions Carlson completed his carpentry apprenticeship with Ethan Field Constructions ahead of schedule. He progressed from labourer to apprentice to qualified tradesperson to site supervisor, and is now mentoring two apprentices on his own projects.
	Dulamai Wightman Darling Downs South West Region Employer: Howells Group Constructions Dulamai completed his carpentry apprenticeship with Howells Group Constructions. Within three months of qualifying, he was running jobs independently, a genuine reflection of what the right training and the right employer can achieve together.
	Caedyn Gilby Darling Downs South West Region Employer: Fleming's Welding Service Pty Ltd Caedyn completed his engineering fabrication apprenticeship with Fleming's Welding Service in Roma seven months ahead of schedule. His trainer describes him as one of the most capable TIG welders he has encountered in his career.

School: Marist College Emerald

Leighton is a Year 12 student at Marist College Emerald completing a school based carpentry apprenticeship with Mattingley Renovations. He balances school, work, competitive boxing, and a weekend job, and was named Junior Sportsman of the Year at the 2026 Emerald Australia Day ceremony. Leighton arranged his own work experience before committing to the trade, and his initiative and discipline are what the school based pathway was built for.

We are incredibly proud of every one of our 17 nominees and the employers, schools, and communities that support them. The Queensland Training Awards celebrate the best of vocational education and training in this state, and we are honoured to have so many of our people recognised.

National Apprenticeship Week at Blue Dog Training

National Apprenticeship Week was a busy and rewarding week across our Ipswich and Milton offices, with plenty happening both in the office and behind the scenes.

Throughout the week, we ran daily giveaways to recognise the effort our apprentices put in every day. Each night, one apprentice received a $250 Total Tools voucher along with a Blue Dog × TradeMutt shirt. It was a simple way to acknowledge the commitment it takes to balance work, training and everything else that comes with an apprenticeship.

We also held drop-in events at both offices, inviting apprentices to come in after work, spin the prize wheel and spend some time with our team. It was great to see apprentices taking the opportunity to stop by, whether that was to enter the draw, ask questions, check in with their trainer or just say hello.

Weeks like this are a good reminder that apprenticeships are about more than qualifications. They’re about support, relationships and creating an environment where apprentices feel comfortable reaching out when they need guidance.

While National Apprenticeship Week is a chance to celebrate, our focus remains the same year-round, supporting apprentices through every stage of their training and helping them build long-term careers in the trades.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland Update

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland will be rolling out a statewide construction compliance campaign from February 2026, with a strong focus on preventing falling objects on site.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland Inspectors will be visiting construction sites across Queensland and carrying out audits, with enforcement action where safety duties are not being met. This comes off the back of several serious incidents across the industry and is a timely reminder to make sure site controls are solid and consistently applied.

The campaign focuses on common high-risk activities such as crane lifts, scaffolding, formwork, EWPs, precast panels, and general material storage and housekeeping.

We are sharing this purely as an FYI so all our employer partners and apprentices are aware and can check in on their current site practices. The official WHSQ update includes practical examples of controls and information on free, face to face advisory support for Queensland businesses.
