Blue Dog Training was established in 2004 and has been delivering nationally recognised construction and engineering training in Queensland for over 20 years. We started as a Queensland-born RTO with a straightforward mission: to do training better, with real tradies teaching real skills. Two decades later, many of our original trainers are still with us, many of our original employers are still with us, and we are still doing what we set out to do.
When someone asks how long Blue Dog Training has been around, the honest answer is: long enough that we have seen a lot of change in the industry, and we are still here because we got the fundamentals right.
How did Blue Dog Training start?
Blue Dog Training was founded by experienced tradies who saw a gap between the way training was being delivered and the way the construction industry actually worked. The founding idea was that trade training should be built by tradies, for tradies: practical, on-the-job, and grounded in real industry experience rather than classroom theory.
That philosophy has not changed since 2004.
What milestones has Blue Dog Training achieved?
In the years after launching, Blue Dog Training became a registered training organisation and introduced one of Australia's first online White Card courses, making construction safety training accessible to learners across Queensland and nationally.
Over time, Blue Dog Training expanded its programs to include carpentry and engineering apprenticeships, practical short courses, mobile learning tools, and the VETiS program connecting Queensland secondary schools to industry. The company has grown to operate from locations in Milton (Brisbane), Ipswich, and the Gold Coast.
Why does trainer continuity matter at Blue Dog Training?
One of the things we are most proud of is our trainer retention. Many Blue Dog Training trainers have been with us for over a decade. This matters for apprentices and employers because a long-term trainer is more than an assessor: they are a mentor who knows the apprentice, knows the employer's business, and builds a genuine relationship over the course of the apprenticeship.
High trainer turnover is a problem in the training industry. It is not a problem at Blue Dog Training.
What awards has Blue Dog Training received?
Blue Dog Training is a proud, award-winning RTO. We have been recognised through industry programs including the Queensland Training Awards (QTA) for our contribution to vocational education and training in Queensland.
