From an early age I have been involved in the construction industry. My dad is a tradesman and I would often spend weekends and school holidays helping him out. At 17 I started my Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship. I was fortunate to work for a builder who exposed me to all aspects of the construction industry. Once I completed my apprenticeship I worked as a sub-contract carpenter and later went on to get my builders licence.
Whilst I was working on the tools I supervised a number of apprentices myself. I enjoyed working with apprentices and taking the time to train them how to produce work at a tradesperson level. I decided that I would enrol myself in a Bachelor of Vocational Education and Training and pursue a career in training apprentices.
I soon landed a job working in an institute as a carpentry trainer. It was there that I met Brad, my business partner. We both felt that training could be done better and that it could be done to suit the industry and not the institute.
Brad and I had to resign from our positions as carpentry trainers to start our company, Blue Dog Training. In the early days of developing the company Brad and I became Workplace Health and Safety Officers and sub-contracted carpentry work together.
I am proud to be a part of Blue Dog Training and we are fortunate to have such a dedicated team of staff to support our clients. Hearing about our apprentices going on to become successful business owners and coming back to Blue Dog Training to have their apprentices trained by us is a constant motivator to develop resources that meet their needs.
I began work in the building industry in 1991, and then when construction slowed in 1993, I spent 6 months working in the Gulf on cattle stations before returning to complete my apprenticeship. In the early nineties work was tight and apprenticeships were gold.
I completed my apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery then worked as a sub-contract carpenter on new homes, renovations and commercial construction then became a registered builder.
Kris and I worked together as trainers at an institute and felt that training was inadequate and could be done much better and at a time and place that suits the apprentice and employer.
I’ve been an apprentice, employed apprentices and trained apprentices. My introduction into training was with a model that was designed around the requirements of the training organisation rather than the needs of the apprentice and employer. These inadequacies and barriers to quality learning are what have driven Blue Dog Training to become what it is today.
Facilitating quality outcomes for apprentices and employers that were not previously available is my motivation. I enjoy seeing people take an opportunity and build on it.
