The factor by which absorbed dose in rads (q.v.) is multiplied to obtain effective or equivalent dose in rem. Sometimes used interchangeably with relative biological effectiveness (RBE), a term which should be limited to research applications. Typical QFs are: x-ray = 1, beta = 1, alpha = 20, protons = 10, fast neutrons = 10.
